About the Centre for Trail Excellence
Research and resources for the trail sector
The Centre for Trail Excellence is an initiative led by Trans Canada Trail to ensure Canada’s trail sector has access to the funding, research and resources necessary for developing and maintaining exceptional trails.
It builds sector capacity – equipping trail managers and partners to meet evolving challenges, strengthen operations and deliver exceptional trail experiences. Its work is grounded in four research areas: trail design and management, trail sector capacity, healthy communities, and trail accessibility and inclusion.
1. Trail design and management
Exploring techniques and best practices to support the design, construction and maintenance of sustainable and climate-resilient trails.
2. Trail sector capacity
Examining the systems, strategies and data that enable trail organizations to operate sustainably, respond to change and grow their impact.
3. Healthy communities
Exploring how access to well-designed trail systems supports physical and mental well-being, belonging and community cohesion.
4. Trail accessibility and inclusion
Investigating barriers to access and exploring tools, technologies and design strategies to make trails more inclusive for everyone.
