2020 National Trail Sector Survey Results 

The 2020 National Trail Sector Survey was conducted to better understand five topic areas within the trail sector in Canada.

The 2020 National Trail Sector Survey was conducted to better understand five topic areas within the trail sector in Canada and received responses from 400+ people from a wide variety of trail organizations. 

The survey covered the following topics and key finding about each topic are included in the report: 

  • State of the trail 
  • Ready-to-go projects  
  • Workforce capacity 
  • Supporting local tourism  
  • Trail usage – public health  

 
Key findings include: 

  • 80% of groups need financial support to address decaying infrastructure 
  • 96% of respondents plan to complete a project within the next two years 
  • 50% of trail groups hire temporary/seasonal workers 
  • 85% of trail groups recruit volunteers 
  • 78% consider their trail a one-day tourist destination 
  • More than 60% of respondents have no capacity to measure trail usage
